James Cairns and James Smythe (flute & Piano)

James made his debut playing flute at the Sydney Opera House aged 17, and has since played across the UK and Europe. He has performed with ensembles far and wide, including the BBC Philharmonic, and performed principal flute for the William Alwyn film music CD recorded by Naxos. James received a scholarship for £10,000 from the National Trust to study at the RNCM under the tutelage of Peter Lloyd, Richard Davis, Linda Verrier, Joanne Boddington, Stephen Preston, and Rowland Sutherland. He took part in orchestral performances under the baton of Nicholas Kraemer, Garry Walker, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Roger Hamilton, and Sir Mark Elder. James has performed at the Royal Fairfield Hall, Wembley Stadium, Royal Albert Hall, Lotherton Hall, Grieg Concert Hall (Bergen), and for Members of the European Parliament. He has participated in masterclasses with Sir James Galway, William Bennett (OBE), Atarah Ben-Tovim (MBE), Emily Beynon, Robert Winn, Lorna McGhee, and Jean-Louis Beaumadier.
