Description

James Sadler, Oxford pastry cook and first English aeronaut: his crossing of the Bristol Channel and other early Welsh aeronautical adventures

James Sadler (1753-1828), the Oxford pastry cook who became the unlikely first Englishman to fly in Oxford in 1784. Sadler based himself in Bristol for some years, and in 1810 became the first man to fly over (but then into!) the Bristol Channel after skirting the Glamorgan coast – this being the first balloon flight over Welsh soil. Seven years later his son Windham touched down in Anglesey after making the first ever aerial crossing of the Irish Sea. Some years earlier, valiant though ill-fated Welsh efforts to fly had centred on Swansea.
