Description

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland invite you to a talk on James Sutherland: Botanist, Antiquary and Numismatist. This talk will look at three aspects of this remarkable man.

The Botanist
James Sutherland (c.1639-1719) was appointed as the first 'Intendant' of what would become the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. A skilled botanist, he obtained a Regius Professorship of Botany and was also appointed to the position of King's Botanist. His publication, the Hortus Medicus Edinburgensis (1683) was the first catalogue of plants in the Garden and the first of its kind in Scotland. With Lorna Mitchell, Head of the Library, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

The Antiquarian
Sutherland was also a keen antiquarian and had a recognised library of botanical and numismatic works, the latter subject forming a once unrecognised and considerable part of his collection. We will also examine aspects of the collection's acquisition, provenance, use and eventual purchase by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates in 1705 and 1707. With Robert Betteridge, Rare Books Curator, National Library of Scotland.

The Numismatist
As part of his antiquarian pursuits, Sutherland was a keen numismatist, or coin collector. He formed a substantial collection of coins, which were sold to the Faculty of Advocates and by them to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Today, some of his orginal coin collection can still be identified within the collections of the National Museum of Scotland. With Nicholas Holmes, Research Associate, Numismatics, National Museum of Scotland

In 2020, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, the second oldest botanic garden in the UK, will celebrate its 350th anniversary and the talk is a fitting tribute to our first Intendant or Regius Keeper, James Sutherland. The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland will also celebrate its 240th anniversary in late 2020.
