Event description

Description

Coil Pottery Ceramics for Adult Beginners. Weekend Course.

Explore the possibilities of coil pottery ceramics in this weekend-long course with clay artist Paddy Hartley at his London Bridge studio. Over the course of the weekend (12 hours studio time) you will create at least 2 pots/forms with a focus on good technique and good build quality. The emphasis is on fun, and making good quality work!

Over an intensive 2 days you will be will be introduced to:

A straightforward design approach.
The work of other coil potters (imagery)
How to safely work with clay (yes, there is a dangerous way to work with clay!)
Working with a choice of 2 very different types of clay, a smooth white stoneware & coarse red brick clay
Preparing/wedging clay. (Good exercise!)
Creating consistent coils for construction.
Understanding how to create a stable piece of work.
Fettling, finishing, texturing and burnishing/polishing.

COURSE NUMBERS: Only 2 places are available per course so you are ensured excellent one-on-one contact time and guidance in the creation of your work.

GLAZING AND COLLECTING FINISHED WORK: Once built, ceramic work can take up to a week/10 days to dry and fire prior to glazing. You will be informed by email when your work is ready for glazing whereupon you can either decide to let the studio glaze your work with your selection of glaze or you can arrange to visit the studio for a ‘glaze evening’ to glaze the work yourself which should take no more than an hour. Once glazed, all work must be collected within 4 weeks.

LOCATION: The studio is located near the Guy’s Hospital Campus, King’s College London (2 minute walk from London Bridge Tube Station) and is secure access only. Paddy will email all participants prior to the class to arrange to meet you as a group outside the studio on the day.
