Event description

Description

Are you fascinated by historical food? Would you like to recreate the flavours of the past? Do you never find time to do it at home? Would you like to spend a few hours with others recreating tradition?

"It was to bedone in a quiet, unpretending, elegant way, infinitely superior to the bustle and preparation, the regular eating and drinking." Emma

Come and join in an unique historic picnic making workshop in a Regency kitchen in Hove. Down in the basement we will work with historic recipes recreating the tastes of Regency summers gone by.

At this workshop you will work together to create a picnic Jane Austen would have been proud to have eaten. We'll make delicious pork or vegetarian raised pies, construct a beautiful Salamagundy salad dish, make some Shrewsbury buns and put together a delightful syllabub.

Then we'll load up our picnic hamper and stroll across to Brunswick Square gardens where we'll eat the picnic we've made together, enjoy the view and reflect on our morning.

At the end of the course you’ll leave with anything you haven't eaten and a booklet with history facts and recipes so you can create your own historic picnic for your friends.

p.s In the case of bad weather we can picnic in one of the elegant upstairs rooms of The Regency Town House.

There is an early bird booking of £31 until 2nd September afterwards the price rises to £37.

The workshop is given by The Regency Cook, Paul Couchman. He's the founder of the successful Dine Like a Servant fundraising dinners at the Town House and has given many food courses in the Town House's kitchen including courses in making Christmas Puddings, Fermentation and Hot Cross Buns. In his free time he works on restoring a small Edwardian house in Brighton and tending a modest allotment. He also spend inordinate amounts of time being charming to people on social media.
