About this event
About this event
Jane’s Walk is a community-based approach to city building that uses volunteer-led walking tours to make space for people to connect around their neighbourhoods. Starting in 2006 and named for American-Canadian urban activist Jane Jacobs, by 2017 there were over 1700 Jane's Walks in 225 cities around the world. This is the first year that Jane's Walks have taken place in Scotland, with Sunday Assembly Edinburgh, the city's 'secular congregation' acting as Edinburgh hosts. There are walks planned so far in the West End, Willowbrae, Stockbridge, Balgreen/Saughton Park and Broughton. We invite you to join Jane's Walk West End. We will meet at the Cafe in Saughton Park from 10.30 on Saturday 7th May 2022, leaving about 10.45 to stroll round the park, taking in its history, then amble down the Water of Leith, taking detours into Balgreen or continuing to Roseburn Park, past Murrayfield Stadium, with stops every so often to survey the view, talk about things we're noticing, stories of the past, present and future, and things we love about the area. The walk will take between an hour and an and a half with plenty of stops and there will be an opportunity to continue the conversation in a café afterwards for those who desire.
For those familiar with the Situationists, it is akin to dérive (from the French "drift"), an unplanned journey through an urban landscape, in which participants drop their everyday relations and "let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there".
The Balgreen walk will be loosely led by brothers Titus and Geoffrey Alexander, who lives in Baird Drive and uses a wheelchair.
We have no agenda except to share the company of neighbours, enjoy the walk and any stories you may have about the area.
It is inspired by Mark McKergow's Village In The City initiative, Jane Jacobs' commitment to mindful development of cities, and the International Situationists' psychogeographical stolling - Seriously: it is about meeting people, chatting and appreciating our neighbourhood.
Please register now and join us on the day! Any questions or concerns, please contact Titus at titusa0@gmail.com or on 07720394740. Looking forward to exploring ouor neighbourhood with you.
