WORD FACTORY PRESENTS:
Sublime Women, a celebration of classic and contemporary short story writers.
This is the third masterclass of our Sublime women series, linking classes, salons, our reading club and offering opportunities to hear your work throughout the year.
An unmissable opportunity to work with one of Scotland’s most acclaimed writers as she explores the influences of another on her own writing. Janice Galloway, winner of the American Academy of Arts & Letters EM Forster Award, will celebrate and investigate Muriel Spark.
Spark used the phrase 'Scots by formation’ to describe herself and the blend of influences that made her both unique and a product from the perspective of Northern Britain.
Using selections from her short stories - and some from her short novels - Janice will investigate Spark’s confident authorial voice, subjects and characters, and distinctive concision.
Short pauses in which you will be invited to respond - in writing and talk - to ideas inspired by Spark’s beloved Border Ballads, her own influence and other contemporary Scottish work will be in ready supply.
Come prepared to push the boundaries of your imagination in the company of a writer of novels, short stories, poetry and non-fiction, a major collaborator with visual artists, musicians, typographers and videographers.
Class limited to 25 places.
DON'T MISS THE EVENING SALON
Join Deborah Levy and Kirsty Gunn at our salon that evening – there will be readings and reflections on the life and work of short story genius Katherine Mansfield.
