Event description

Description

Join us for a night of reading, poetry and feminist comedy at Market House in Reading.

Janine reads extracts and poems from her new book, The Big J vs The Big C. Kate Smurthwaite does some rib-tickling feminist comedy. And local speakers talk about Reading's fight to save our National Health Service.

Poet, author and activist Janine Booth was part of the ranting poetry movement in the 1980s, performing as ‘The Big J’. In late 2016, she discovered a strange indentation in her right breast and was subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her new book is a collection of candid and enthralling journal extracts, poetry, meticulous research and substantive politics, in which Janine details her journey from detection and diagnosis, through surgery, to ‘getting over it’.
Janine will be reading from the book and will be joined by comedian Kate Smurthwaite and local guests.

Food and drink available at the bar and various foodstalls in the venue. We will be in the Vault which is towards the back of the venue. There is wheelchair access.

Tickets £5 here, or on the door - free if times are tough. All profits after event costs will be donated to The Royal Berkshire Hospital Charity.
