Japan Now: New voices, New visions
Event Information
Description
As Japan Now reaches its finale we offer a glimpse of the future, celebrating the Japanese writers and filmmakers who will set the new decade ablaze
6.30pm, New Voices:
Motoyuki Shibata, David Boyd and Polly Barton:
As a critic and editor, Motoyuki Shibata has reshaped the landscape of Japanese literature, introducing leading writers of the post-Murakami generation to English readers, with voices as diverse as Hiromi Kawakami and Hiroko Oyamada published in his journal Monkey Business. Shibata is joined by David Boyd, translator of Mieko Kawakami and Hideo Furukawa, and Polly Barton, translator of Aoko Matsuda, for readings and discussion on future translations, and the writers to look out for over the next decade.
8.00pm, New Visions:
Ten Years Japan: Film Screening:
Executive produced by the acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, Ten Years Japan is an anthology of five short science fiction films set in an imagined Japan ten years from now. Like a Japanese Black Mirror, the shorts explore issues ranging from the aging population to environmental disaster and rising militarism. Varying in mood, style and artistic approach, the anthology offers fascinating insights into contemporary Japan.
Chie Hayakawa, Director of the short film Plan 75 (a compelling vision of how Japan might address the aging population issue) will be in conversation with chair Christopher Harding at the screening.
