Event description

Description

Experience the ‘Floating World’ in this study session about the very special collection of Japanese prints held by Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. Many of these are not on regular display, and are being brought out of storage for the Art Fund. Learn about artists such as Hokusai (whose ‘Wave’ is an iconic image), Hiroshige, Utamaro and Harunobu in a small group setting. Kate Newnham will be leading these 2 individual sessions. She recently benefited from a Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Grant from the Art Fund which allowed her to undertake a study visit to Japan to deepen her knowledge in this specialist area of art. During the session, she will talk about what she learnt through this study visit.

Kate Newnham is senior curator, Visual Arts at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, where she has worked since 2000. She curates Bristol’s Eastern Art Collection which has ‘Designated’ status as being of national/ international importance. Prior to Bristol, she worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Kate has a strong interest in Japanese culture and lived in Kyoto in 1989.
