This short day course will introduce students to two book structures, the main being a Japanese four hole binding.
The course is suitable for complete beginners or for anyone with a little knowledge wishing to learn more.
Over the course of the day you will complete a traditional four hole Japanese book (two time permitting). You will be taught how to make Paper Stiches which form the primary binding of the book before then going on to prepare covers and finally assemble and sew the book. Japanese papers will be used throughout, from the book block to the covers.
Alongside the Japanese book you will also have the opportunity to make a small softback notebook with a pre foiled cover as well.
Roger Grech is a Bookbinder and Printmaker, teaching at York College and edition Binding at Stephen Conway Bookbinders Ltd in Halifax. Roger also runs his own workshop, Papercut Bindery, where he binds bespoke journals, small print run editions and undertakes repair work on old well-loved bindings.
