Japanese Knotweed

Dear North West Member,

please find details of our CPD for March

Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica) is regarded by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as one of the world’s top 100 invasive species. It can cause damage to property including drains and pipework, patios, paths and drives, boundary and retaining walls, outbuilding, conservatories and gardens. Treatment programmes are both long and expensive and can last up to three years.

Japanese Knotweed is a growing problem that can severely affect properties including its foundations. This CPD presentation will cover how to identify the weed at different times of the year and the treatment options available. Case studies will be presented . Delegates will be able to identify Japanese Knotweed without having to call in a specialist which will save time and money. Japanese Knotweed is an increasing problem for several types of industries and being able to identify it would be beneficial. As well as helping to identify Japanese Knotweed, delegates will be able to learn of the different ways of treating and disposing of the weed.

The CPD will cover -

  • What is Japanese knotweed and learn how to identify throughout the seasons.
  • Why it is a problem and the impacts it has.
  • The legislations surrounding Japanese knotweed, including proposed changes to the law.
  • Regulations relating to removal to licensed landfill and onsite burial.
  • Methods of eradication, tailored solutions and aftercare monitoring.
