About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Discover the world of traditional Japanese mending embroidery and learn sashiko and boro stitching, in this creative and mindful workshop.

Your teacher will provide a range of templates and plenty of inspiration and tips. This is a great activity for avoiding textile waste and is a fun, creative and meditative way to spend a couple of hours. You will leave the workshop excited to apply your new skills.

Materials are provided and you are welcome to bring your own clothes to work on too.

Suitable for beginner or experienced sewers.

About the tutor:

Karen Giroud is passionate about creativity and sustainability in textiles. She has designed and made costumes for film/TV and theatre and has taught art, design and textiles in schools and workshops for over 20 years.

Donation:

There's an optional donation to go towards the running costs of the classes- this stops people booking up all the free tickets then not showing up!

Eventbrite requires £1 to be entered in the box but we can refund that in cash when you attend the class - or you can put it towards a cup of tea from the kitchen :)

Organized by

Sketchy Beats is a not-for-profit arts space on Great Junction Street, Leith. It's an open platform for creatives of any kind to use and share their ideas with the public. The space is designed to be affordable and accessible to everyone - people who have never organised events before, musicians who have never played outside their own bedroom, artists who have never exhibited before. It aims to be a place where creativity brings the community together, without money being an obstacle.

Everything in the space is donation-based. If you want a cup of tea or coffee, you can help yourself and leave a small donation. If you want to bring your own alcohol, just leave a donation for corkage. If you want to organise your own event, it's free to book, we just ask for a donation from each person who comes in. If you are interested in booking the space for your own event, workshop, meet-up or rehearsal, send us a message!
