Event description
Learn the basics of mokuhanga, the traditional Japanese art of water-based woodblock printmaking

About this event

On this day workshop you will be introduced to carving a block, inking with brushes and water based inks and hand printing your image with a baren. Mokuhanga is ideal for artists wanting to learn a non-toxic method of printing with little equipment.

What experience do I need?

Some previous experience in relief printmaking will be helpful, but not essential. This is a mixed ability course for complete beginners as well as those with previous experience. You will be guided through the process in a friendly studio environment.

What will I make?

You will produce an edition of at least 10 woodcut prints on A5 paper. There will be the option to carve two separate blocks to print from throughout the day.

Who is my tutor?

Julia McKinlay is an artist based in Leeds and is currently working on a PhD at Leeds Beckett University. Working in print and sculpture, Julia has exhibited widely and participated in residencies in Japan and Iceland. Her teaching experience includes being based at Newcastle University as a Teaching Fellow in Printmaking 2016-2017. Julia is also a member of print collective Printers’ Symphony.

Do I need to bring anything?

All materials and equipment will be provided. You may find it useful to bring along sketchbooks, or images to use as inspiration and a small folder to take your prints away in. We also sell A3 portfolio folders for just £3 if you wish to buy one from us.

Covid Safety

Please visit our website here for further information on our current Covid-19 measures.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after this time no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings or if lockdown measures are put back in place). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
