Event description

Description

Would you like to learn coding but you don’t know where to start? Did you try online classes but somehow never found the time to study?

2.5 years ago I left my previous job to become a Web Developer. I went through a coding bootcamp, started as a Web Developer intern and moved into a junior and then mid-level developer role. Pretty soon I wanted to share my learnings and knowledge with others, which is why I started Cafe Robot, the first non-awkward Computer Club. With Cafe Robot I have taught more than 100 students about technology and coding, both in Amsterdam and at creative business school Hyper Island in Sweden.

This class is hosted in collaboration with The Cool School - offering workshops and courses by the raddest creatives of Amsterdam. Check out more classes here: https://thecool.school/

About the class

JavaScript WTF!? is a leisure coding-class for those who want an introduction and prefer humans to online-classes. Using real-life examples and props, we want you to have fun while getting smarter. During 4 weekly evening classes you will learn the basics of programming and how the internet works. In a small group of students there will be enough time for everyones questions.

This ticket is valid for the entire course: 4 evening sessions a 2hrs.

What you will learn:

Wednesday April 22 (7PM - 9PM):

You will be able to understand JavaScript’s role in the bigger context of web development and how it works alongside HTML and CSS when rendering a website.

Wednesday April 29 (7PM - 9PM):

You will get introduced to how you tell JavaScript ‘what to do’. You will playfully experience how a function works and draw a pizza-picture with JavaScript.

Wednesday May 06 (7PM - 9PM):

You will learn more about the concepts of JavaScript and different ways how to structure and think about your code. You will practise how to create and write a class and how to use it.

Wednesday May 13 (7PM - 9PM):

You will learn how to make a website interactive with JavaScript by toggling CSS styles and manipulating DOM elements. You will also learn about the pitfalls of JavaScript and how to continue your learning journey. Also: Closing Drinks @ Cafe Brecht.

Requirements

A modern laptop and a recent version of the browser Google Chrome.

You don’t have to have coding pre-knowledge, this class is for beginners.

What others say

“Valerie has a very engaging and enthusiastic way of teaching. Her passion for coding shows through and she is a true inspiration for the students.”

Sandro Miletti, Program Manager Hyper Island

“I was always interested and maybe a little intimidated of coding, but I decided to embark on a four-week course in JavaScript. Working in recruitment, the course has definitely helped me to better understand the developers I've worked with over the last 19 months. It’s so cool to finally be part of the tech nerd club!!"

Juliana Velandia Gomez, JavaScript WTF!? graduate 2019
