About this event

Saxophonist Simon Spillett

“Spillett doesn't shake you by the hand so much as grab you by the throat...” The Penguin Guide To Jazz Recordings

Simon’s appearances always draw a big crowd and a tremendous response to his breathtaking set of hard-swinging jazz, centered around the music of Britain’s first international jazz star, Tubby Hayes

Described by the late Humphrey Lyttelton as ‘formidable’, Simon Spillett has won several awards for his music, including the tenor saxophone category of the British Jazz Awards and Jazz Journal magazine’s Critic’s Choice CD of the Year.

He’s worked with Sir John Dankworth, Stan Tracey, Peter King and The Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. He has recorded three albums, Introducing Simon Spillett, Sienna Red and Square One, all of which have received highly favourable reviews in both the specialist and national press. His festival, concert and club appearances across the UK have included sold-out gigs at Ronnie Scott’s and the Brecon Jazz Festival and he has broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz-Line Up with his own band.

He has also worked as a writer, penning the definitive biography of Tubby Hayes (The Long Shadow Of The Little Giant), articles for magazines including Jazz Journal and Record Collector and acting as a consultant for a number of jazz record labels, in which capacity he has written booklet essays for over seventy albums.

“Those of us who have caught him....have been left blinking in disbelief. It's not only his mastery of the tenor saxophone, phenomenal though that is, but the absolute conviction of his playing that is so impressive.” Sunday Observer

“An extraordinarily talented tenor player...” Jazzwise

“A bruising, scruff-of-the-neck hard bopper, he has examined and absorbed all the greats...generates huge excitement, passion and swagger.” MOJO

with Pete Billington: keys • Alec Dankworth: bass • Jeremy Shoham: sax • Rick Finlay: drums

FAQs

Where will I be seated? The Elephant is a small local pub. We have very limited seating capacity, so we seat our audience in order of booking. So the sooner you book, the closer to the front you'll be! Whaddya waiting for?

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event? There is on-street parking in the roads round the pub. West Finchley underground station (Northern Line) is a short walk away.

Can I pay on the night? Yes, for those who haven't pre-booked there is a collection at the interval .We do expect you to contribute the normal admission fee unless you qualify for a concessionary rate.

Are there any concessions? There is a lower ticket price for students in full-time education. Students and unwaged can also turn up on the night and pay whatever you like (or even nothing). We want you to be able to enjoy the music, and maybe you'll come back and pay the full admission in better times…

Accessibility Deaf and disabled people can apply for an extra ticket, free of charge, if they would be unable to attend a gig without the active support of another person. We encourage our audience to book online (we are too small to have a full-time box office) but if you have any difficulties booking on Eventbrite just call us on 020 8361 0265.
