Event Details

Shireen Francis

“Quite simply, one of the best British jazz vocalists of this generation” BBC Radio

A warm, engaging and soulful performer, Shireen Francis has developed her own unique blend of jazz with flavours of gospel, blues, calypso and reggae. Performing with some of the country’s top jazz musicians, the combination of Shireen’s stunning expressive voice coupled with her innate musicianship has delighted audiences all around the world.

Born in London of Jamaican and Goan heritage, Shireen initially learned her craft in Afro-Caribbean music. However, inspired by artists such as Marlena Shaw, Dianne Reeves and Carmen Lundy, she soon moved into jazz singing and writing her own material.

During her 25-year career, Shireen has performed at top international venues and festivals, including Ronnie Scott’s, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, 606 Club and Pizza Express Dean Street. She has performed with acclaimed artists such as John Etheridge, Jim Mullen, Benny Green, Humphrey Lyttleton, Mark Murphy, Anita Wardell and Billy Ocean.

Shireen is also an inspirational and intuitive teacher who runs her own courses and workshops. With many years of jazz performance and teaching experience behind her, she guides and nurtures her students in the art of “singing in the moment”, enabling creativity and enhancing performance.

“A beautiful artist with real depth and heart” Jazz UK

“I recently had the pleasure of playing a gig with Shireen Francis & loved the way she sang & interacted with the audience. She’s a great singer & a great communicator.” Roger Beaujolais, vibes

“A brilliant vocalist…An extraordinary performance.” Jazzwise Magazine

“An appointment with great music. Shireen Francis, accompanied by Gunther Kurmayr at the piano, was mesmerizing — wonderful notes served in crystal flutes by a virtuoso vocalist.” Roberto De Nart, Belluno Festival, Italy

“Shireen we love you!” Elle Macpherson

With Gunther Kurmayr: piano • Manuel Alvarez: bass • Jeremy Shoham: sax • Rick Finlay: drums

FAQs
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is on-street parking in the roads round the pub.
Colindale underground station (Northern Line) is a short walk away.

Can I pay on the night?
Yes, for those who haven't pre-booked there is a collection at the interval (although you won't be entitled to the discount on meals). We do expect you to contribute the normal admission fee unless you qualify for a concessionary rate.

Are there any concessions?
There is a lower ticket price for students in full-time education. Students and unwaged can also turn up on the night and pay whatever you like (or even nothing). We want you to be able to enjoy the music, and maybe you'll come back and pay the full admission in better times…

Accessibility
Deaf and disabled people can apply for an extra ticket, free of charge, if they would be unable to attend a gig or outdoor event without the active support of another person.
We encourage our audience to book online (we are too small to have a full-time box office) but if you have any difficulties booking on Eventbrite just call us on 020 8361 0265.

The Chandos Arms welcomes assistance dogs (or indeed all friendly dogs) on leads
