I’m a third world girl

uncut diamond

unfound pearl

wakened from my dreaming

far too early for my years….      Extract from Third World Girl by Jean 'Binta' Breeze

This free literature event celebrates and launches in Leicester Third World Girl, the new poetry Book-DVD by Jean 'Binta' Breeze published by Bloodaxe.  Jean is based in Leicester and has a strong presence in the city as a poet, mentor and workshop facilitator.  All are welcome to attend on a first-come-first-served basis.  To read more about the book and Bloodaxe visit

Dub poet, playwright, director and mentor

Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze has shaped a voice that demands attention and which resonates and celebrates the human experience. Audiences around the world relate to and are inspired by her writing, her rhythmic wordplay and her electric stage presence.

She is the winner of a National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) Award and in 2011 becomes an Honorary Creative Writing Fellow at the University of Leicester. She splits her time between Jamaica and the UK.

'A major, perhaps even a great voice. For stature, Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze invites a Caribbean comparison with Maya Angelou, except that her range is broader still. Her poetry shifts effortlessly through standard English to a native Jamaican which has no equal in its emotional depth' The Herald

Renaissance One and BCA

Renaissance OnePassionate about literature and words wherever we find them, Renaissance One are producers and advocates who work across literature artforms - from fiction to poetry and talks - from book launches and lectures to tours

Writers and artists we have worked and collaborated with include Ali Smith, Amiri Baraka, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Gary Younge, Caroline Bird, Caryl Phillips, Robert Antoni, Michael Horovitz, Patience Agbabi, Soweto Kinch, Ali Smith, Mark Gwynne Jones, Andrew 'Mulletproof' Graves and Dan Rhodes.  Our forté is to channel our curiosity, imagination and our wide-ranging understanding of literature into any given project to bring unique results.

Black Cultural Archives:  Founded in 1981, the Black Cultural Archives’ mission is to collect, preserve and celebrate the heritage and history of Black people in Britain. We  opened the UK’s first dedicated Black heritage centre in Brixton  in July 2014. Our new location will enable us to provide greater access to our archive,  learning spaces and a programme of exhibitions and events that explore British history from a unique perspective.

Our unparalleled and growing archive collection offers insight into the history of people of African and Caribbean descent in Britain. The bulk of the collection is drawn from the twentieth century to the present day, while some materials date as far back as the second century. Our work at Black Cultural Archives recognises the importance of untold stories. We welcome everybody to join us and unfold these fascinating narratives together.
