Event description

Description

Calling young people of Swindon – between the ages of 12 and 21 – who enjoy creative writing!

We are starting a FREE new poetry group. Jefferies Young Poets will meet weekly from 21st April 2018, on Saturdays, between 11am and 1pm at the Richard Jefferies Museum in Coate. Throughout our sessions together, we’ll discuss poetry, read poetry, and write poetry of our own. You’ll also be given the chance to work with some top spoken word artists, to perform your poetry (if you want to) and to complete an Arts Award at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. You’ll also receive a copy of the fabulous poetry anthology Staying Alive: Real Poems for Unreal Times for no extra cost (so everything’s free!).

We’re looking to welcome young people from all backgrounds, with all levels of writing experience: if you’ve never written a poem outside an English classroom but think it’s something you’d like to try without the pressure of it being marked, we’d love to have you. If you’re stressed out or struggling with confidence, come and join us. We’ll be having some good chats about a wide range of poems and poets, but we promise we’ll swerve any exam-style, line-by-line analysis about curtains being blue because the poet feels sad and that sort of thing. We’ll be getting inspired and creative every session. We want you to express yourselves and share your feelings about the world. We want to show people how brilliant and exciting poetry is!

To begin with, the course will run for six weeks (from 21st April until 26th May) with 16 spaces available. You can book yourself on by hitting the "Register" button and following the steps from there. There isn’t going to be a selection process involved: instead, places will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. (We’d happily have a million of you – well, maybe not quite a million, that would be a handful, but you know what we mean! – if we could: however, the Richard Jefferies Museum is a gorgeously little Victorian farmhouse so there just isn’t the room. More importantly, we need to be able to give all of our writers plenty of 1-to-1 support and mentoring. So we’ll be keeping the group on the smaller side. Thank you for understanding.)

Interested? For more information, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
