Event description

Description

Few artists can have revealed so much about themselves and their work through the written word as Vincent Van Gogh, whose letters have been translated, published and re-published many times. With their frequent references to writers living and dead, the letters also reveal a voracious and very serious reader. Indeed books as physical objects appear in many of his canvases. In advance of Tate Britain’s upcoming exhibition Van Gogh and Britain (27 March – 11 August 2019), this talk explores Van Gogh’s literary enthusiasms. It will incorporate readings from his letters and from the works of Dickens, whose preoccupation with the lives of the poor was a formative influence on this most modern of painters. Jenny Newman’s art lectures have become a focal point of Sherborne’s cultural life. We’re delighted that she has found the time between her rambling and her regular programme of talks to contribute to the festival, on a subject close to her heart.
