About this event

Arts • Fine Art

Join us on Sunday 5th October for a very special celebration of the African American and Native American sculptor Edmonia Lewis with the renowned art historian Professor Susannah Thompson.

The Bute Collection at Mount Stuart cares for a remarkable and rare example of sculpture by Edmonia Lewis, which is one of only two artworks by the artist in the UK. Lewis was the first black and indigenous sculptor to be recognised by the mainstream American and International artistic community, and she spent most of her career in Rome creating neoclassical sculpture - soon coming into contact with the 3rd Marquess of Bute while on his travels.

In this lecture, Professor Thompson will reveal the incredible story of how the remarkable Bust of Christ came to be located on the Isle of Bute, and how the sculptor Edmonia Lewis became a trailblazer in the art world.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Susannah Thompson to Mount Stuart for a celebration of the work of Edmonia Lewis during Black History Month this October.
