Event description
Learn to create multi-colour prints using the jigsaw method of linocut.

About this Event

Printing a linocut using the jigsaw method is an easy way to print a design in multiple colours. The lino is cut into pieces which are inked up separately, then they are put back together before printing. The jigsaw printing method is an ingenious way to make impressive, multi-coloured prints without having to carve multiple blocks, attempt a reduction cut, or put your paper through the press more than once. It’s also very satisfying to do!

On this one day workshop you will be shown how to carve the lino block, apply the inks, and print it – both with our Albion printing press and by hand burnishing methods. You will be shown examples of lino prints made using this method, and be given advice on the kind of designs that work best.

What experience do I need?

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and would also be useful for those who have done some lino printing before but never previously attempted the jigsaw method. Those who wish to develop their skills and gain ideas for future projects are also welcome to attend.

What will I make?

You will make an edition of lino printed images in two or more colours. We’ll be working A6 size on A4 paper, and there will be several different ink colours to choose from. Expect to make an edition of up to 8 prints onto cartridge paper.

Who is my tutor?

Susie Rumsby is a Printmaking Instructor at Leeds Arts University, where she introduces students to screen print, etching, linocut, monoprint and bookbinding. Before coming to teach art in Leeds, Susie studied printmaking in Portland, Oregon, where she also worked as a master printer’s apprentice, an artists’ assistant, and at Portland Art Museum helping to put on shows of prints and drawings. Susie is a founding committee member of Leeds Print Workshop, and believes in making the fun of printmaking open to as many people as possible.

Do I need to bring anything?

All materials will be provided including lino, tools, paper and inks.

If you would like to bring sketchbooks, drawings, photos or other sources of inspiration with you, please do. However, you will also be able to start from scratch with your design on the day.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will issue a refund if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non-refundable.

By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step up into the building and four steps down to the toilets, and no accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
