Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Ghosti UK Sangsad presents Jihadir Ma
Written by Sayiem Choudhury
This is a story about motherhood, the role of women in society and the devastation and estrangement caused by the very real threat of radicalisation in today’s society.
The main character is a woman in her 40s living in UK. She is a housewife with no real dreams or expectations but equally, no complaints. She is happy with her lot until she makes the terrible discovery that her son has become a JIHADI and left home. Her thoughts, emotions, and entire existence are shattered by this revelation. Why has he chosen this path?
She doesn’t understand what could lead him to have such radically different thoughts and beliefs from those of his family, realising that he never expressed his real feelings at home, and wondering how much she really knew him. She comes to the painful conclusion that a breakdown in communication was largely due to her inability to speak English and on this basis questions her existence and her whole identity. Her ultimate decision is that she needs to learn the language of her adopted homeland in order to empower herself by engaging more deeply with those around her, the education of her children, and life in the UK.
