Spring 2017 Stand-Up Comedy Course Information

Dates/times: Saturdays - Feb' 18th till May 6th (12 consecutive Saturdays) at 1pm till 4pm

"The writing and performance skills I learnt on Jills' course were invaluable. It would have taken so many gigs to nail things that seem so simple and I now take for granted. It's the fast route to becoming a comic." Jill Edwards Comedy Workshops graduate Seann Walsh, award winning comic and tv regular.

Jill teaches her affordable accessible comedy classes in an actual comedy club, at the award winning Komedia, Brighton. Her highly acclaimed original Brighton stand-up comedy courses, which have a proven continuous track record of success, offer you the opportunity to explore, play, experiment and discover your "inner comic."

Whether your ambition is to be a professional stand-up comedian or you just fancy having a go at it, then this is the best starting point for you. It's well-established, practical, inspirational - and a lot of fun!

 "People say comedy can't be taught. They could learn a lot from Jill Edwards." Jill Edwards Comedy Workshops graduate Jimmy Carr, award winning comic and tv presenter

You already have the skills you need...

Jill believes if you've ever laughed you already have the skills you need to make others' laugh. All you need now are her unique range of practical comedy writing and performance techniques to access your latent comedy skills. The supportive, encouraging atmosphere of this well-structured comedy course, which runs in a vibrant award winning comedy club, will teach you everything you need to know to get you started.

It's a lot of fun and it's not frightening...

Jill's comedy courses attract people from all walks of life. You do not need to have something funny to say, or know how to write jokes, or feel confident speaking in front of people, to join this course. You will learn to do all of this in the classes, and at your own pace. The idea of stand-up comedy might frighten people, but this course is not frightening. Jill's experienced supportive teaching approach increases your self-confidence and self-belief, empowering you to enjoy discovering your own unique comedy voice.

"Above all the experience was immense fun and I would recommend it to anyone interested in comedy." Jill Edwards Comedy Workshops Graduate Shappi Khorsandi, award winning comic and tv regular

Comedy Course Outline

The course runs on 12 consecutive Saturdays.The aim is to teach you how to create, write and perform your own short stand-up comedy set i.e. an opening, a closing, a bit of material in the middle:

Practical creative exercises to inspire, generate ideas and access your "inner comic;"

Unique comedy writing techniques, formats, including straightforward joke writing;

Performance skills including timing, conquering nerves, remembering material, mic technique;

How to deal with hecklers effectively, coping with and learning from "dying" on stage;

Performing in class with positive constructive feedback to develop your material/peformance;

How/where/when to start gigging: advice, tips, guest professional comic Q + A.

This course also includes key points handouts.

You will be encouraged to "see" what you are learning in comedy classes at comedy clubs.

The course concludes with an informal in-class show. You'll perform your short stand-up set with microphone, lights, on stage at the Komedia (it's not open to the public). We will film this set as a memento of your course.

A chance to perform in a "New Act Night" show - live at Komedia!

There's an opportunity to perform your set to our friendly Komedia comedy panel in class on week 11 of this course. They will invite the course participants who are the most ready, to perform in a public "New Act Night" show at Brighton's Komedia on Tues May 9th 2017. Performing in this show is not part of course or guaranteed as places are limited.

Jill is at the centre of the thriving Brighton comedy scene, most of the established local nights are run by her comedy course graduates.
