Description

About us

We are a training provider running Saturday workshops for children aged 8-14 and holiday clubs for older children. We teach the key transferable skills of a lawyer through fun, fast-paced activities and challenges. Each workshop is based on a different theme, developing an interest in a range of topics and confidence in public speaking. Workshops are led by a combination of lawyers, university lecturers, teachers and actors.

What skills will the children develop in the workshops?

One of the key skills we develop is the ability to put a point across clearly, concisely and persuasively. Within the workshops we cover:

  • Debate, advocacy and public speaking skills;
  • Mental agility- being able to think on the spot;
  • Critical and creative thinking skills;
  • Body language – how to be relaxed, focussed and confident;
  • Problem-solving and innovation skills;
  • Leadership and teamwork skills;
  • Negotiation skills
  • Exam skills – study skills and interview skills

Activities vary in each workshop and might cover a ‘dragons den’ style pitch, or a newsnight panel debate, teamwork challenges to design a robot, setting up a new art gallery or publicity event, debating and devising a new law, conducting a negotiation, creating a trailer for a film or running for election as Prime Minister. Every workshop is different, keeping participants engaged and stimulated.

Junior Lawyers’ Club (JLC) Student Certificate

Students receive a certificate on successful completion of the introductory session, and on completion of a set number of workshops after this. The levels of the certificates correspond to the age groups – Pupils, Juniors and Silks. The certificates and levels have been devised in consultation with members of the Board of Professional Advisers, to ensure that activities in the workshops develop the relevant skills for that level.

Junior Lawyers’ Club (JLC) Tutors

Our workshop tutors include a panel of lawyers, university lecturers and actors. They have all been trained in the JLC method of teaching, and all follow the same, detailed workshop directions and materials.

Learning Destination for the Children’s University

The JLC has been validated as a public learning destination for the Children’s University. Any workshops attended will count as hours towards graduation. Please bring your passport to learning to the session.

Cost of the Workshop - £22
