For over 35 years, local researcher and biographer Pete Rochford, has been uncovering the fascinating story of legendary record producer Joe Meek. Through countless interviews with musicians, Meek’s family and friends, and Newent locals who remember him well, Pete has pieced together a treasure trove of memories and little-known facts about Newent’s most famous son.
Alongside his extensive research, Pete served as chairman of the Joe Meek Society for six years, during which he organised events – including a popular charity fundraiser for The Newent Dolphin Club, the very charity Joe himself is still patron of, 58 years after his passing. His dedication to preserving Joe’s story has also seen him interviewed on radio shows such as BBC Radio Gloucestershire and he has even published a full cradle-to-grave biography on the iconic producer.
Since 2017, Pete Rochford has been leading popular walking tours of Newent, sharing Joe Meek’s story with both devoted fans and curious newcomers alike. Each tour offers a unique glimpse into Joe’s life – from his childhood in the 1930s to his trailblazing music career in the 1960s.
