This event brings together the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Right Honourable John Bercow and the Guardian Journalist, Owen Jones to discuss the current state of democracy in the UK and how Parliament can promote it better. They consider issues like the democratic deficit in the UK and the lack of interest in Parliamentary democracy especially among younger age groups and what could be done to change this. They also consider how federalism/regionalism and the likely departure of MPs from Parliament - while the buildings are repaired - might be used as an opportunity to enhance democratic participation in the UK.
Taking place at 2pm Thursday 13th October at the Main Lecture Theatre, Docklands Campus, University of East London, the event will last around 90 minutes and will be followed by a reception at the Knowledge Dock from 3.30- 4pm.
The event is open to students, lecturers and anyone that works at UEL as well as year 11 & year 12 politics students from partner schools.
