Event description

Description

Bishop Robert Byrne CO will introduce Professor Eamon Duffy whose lecture will reference his recent publication, John Henry Newman - A Very Brief History (2019).
The canonisation of Cardinal Newman, the greatest Catholic mind of the 19th century, makes him a role-model for the relationship between theology and the Church’s official magisterium. Some recent interpretations of Newman’s work have stressed the importance of dogma in his thought, and have seen him as an advocate of vigilant orthodoxy. This lecture explores the complexities of Newman's thinking about authority and freedom, and its relevance for the Church today.

Professor Duffy will sign copies of his book afterwards in the Parish Hall. With thanks to Pauline Books and Media, Newcastle upon Tyne and to the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University for their support.
