Event description

Description

Social determinants are increasingly recognised as the most important drivers of health outcomes and life expectancy. Sir Michael Marmot’s 2010 Review showed that social, economic, environmental, political and cultural factors influence peoples’ health at every stage of life, and inequalities in these factors lead to widespread and persistent health inequalities. It’s clear that charities have a role to play in influencing social determinants of health and addressing the inequalities resulting from them.

NPC are working with The Institute of Health Equity and The Health Foundation to help charities—including those that would not define themselves as health charities—to prioritise and develop further action on the social determinants of health.

We are holding an event in July, to consult with charities and others working on the social determinants of health agenda, to understand further how the charity sector can support this agenda. We are interested in whether or not ‘non-health’ charities want to look at their impact on health—or communicate this message about their impact on health to funders, beneficiaries and the public—and what they would need in order to do so.

Sir Michael Marmot will be speaking at the event, followed by a presentation of NPC and IHE’s work so far. We will then host a discussion among attendees to understand the challenges for the non-health charity sector in making the case for health outcomes, what guidance or frameworks may be useful to the sector, and to further explore the role of the voluntary sector in the social determinants of health agenda. We would appreciate your views to help us shape our work.
