Description

About the workshop

Integration, cooperation and collaboration between actors and organisations working on CCA and DRR is crucial in order to build integrated approaches by linking efforts under the Paris Agreement, 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sendai Framework. Collaboration between European and national actors is beneficial for these integrations. This workshop aims to support and boost these institutional strengthening efforts in Europe by collaboration and exchange between European and national actors in these two fields.

The workshop will:

  • Provide an overview of existing information on institutional capacity to address CCA and DRR at different scales;
  • Give room for discussion on how institutions working in CCA and DRR can enhance cooperation;
  • Present examples of good practice at the forefront of integrating and mainstreaming CCA and DRR into policies and practices.

The workshop results – Vision 2030 and way forward – will be used to support integration and mainstreaming of CCA & DRR into policy, institutional arrangements and practice, and will be followed by a second workshop in late 2018/early 2019. Results will feed into the development of guidance on ways and approaches to increase integration, collaboration and cooperation between institutions and organisations working on CCA & DRR towards a more integrated approach in the short-, mid- to long-term.

Background

Based on a recent JRC study, weather-related disasters could affect around two-thirds of the European population annually by the end of this century and could result in a 50-fold increase in fatalities compared to today if no measures are taken (Forzieri G., at al., 2017, JRC).

The Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) communities have similar objectives and are going to benefit from a number of detected synergies in their mandate, scope and activities.

However, risks, vulnerabilities and solutions are framed differently, resulting in diverging policy, planning processes and practice in Europe. The relevant international agreements (Paris, Sendai and Agenda 2030) aim at strengthening coherence and reinforcing development and climate action. This being acknowledged, the Paris Agreement, the Sendai Framework and the Agenda 2030 are depending on each other’s successful implementation – and they explicitly refer to each other.

Reception

Drinks and snacks will be provided at the reception at 18:00, following the workshop.
