Event description

Description

Hopkins attended Highgate School 1854-63, Betjeman the Junior School 1915-17. The happiest days of their lives? We don’t think so! Both boys fell foul of their Highgate headmasters, and we shall stage a re-enactment of their most fearsome encounters! But was there nothing positive in their North London schooldays? We shall make our own assessment. The school archivist will show us where they did their learning and how the school remembers them today. We shall hear what they wrote while at the school and what they said about it. We shall also hear JB’s most Hopkinesque poem and Hopkins’ most Betjemanesque! (A prize if you can correctly identify them both in advance!) Both were summer babies, so we shall finish with a shared celebratory birthday cake.

Our morning activity will be a guided walk round the Village to see school sites, so please wear suitable shoes.

Ticket prices include refreshments and lunch.
