Event description
A workshop on the definition of representation uncertainty in the fields of Earth observation, data assimilation and forecast verification.

About this Event

Joint workshop on representation uncertainty in the Earth Sciences

When analysing data in the Earth Sciences it is often necessary to compare an observation of a physical quantity with its representation in a different form. This includes, for example, using an alternative observation of the same quantity; computing the equivalent of the observation in a geophysical model, which could include variable transformations; or by interpolating the observation onto a binned domain. Such processes result in a representation uncertainty, which is distinct from the instrumental uncertainty inherent in the observation, and is often difficult to evaluate.

Sponsored by the National Centre for Earth Observation, the objective of this workshop is to determine how representation uncertainty is defined and quantified in the Earth science communities of data assimilation, Earth observation and forecast verification. The workshop will facilitate discussion between experts in these communities and aims to develop a consistent terminology across fields, identify common goals and techniques, and foster future collaborations.

Registration and abstract submission

This one and a half day discussion based workshop is open to all experts in the associated fields. We anticipate a maximum of around 60 participants; please note, if the event is heavily over subscribed we may need to limit participation. The deadline for registration is 31st January 2020.

For the workshop we are soliciting abstracts for oral (15 minutes + 5 minutes for questions) and poster presentations. If you would like to apply to present, please submit your abstract using the registration form. Please note that this is an interactive workshop and not a conference so there are limited opportunities to present your work orally. We do encourage you to submit abstracts to present your work, but note that you may be assigned a poster rather than an oral presentation.

Key dates

31st January 2020: abstract submission and registration closes.

14th February 2020: assignment of oral presentation/poster.
