Space and SAGE Poetry
The Women’s Space group is a safe space for Older LGBT+ Women. They meet once a month on a Monday in a warm and welcoming space to socialise, discuss chosen topics and laugh together. The aim of the group is to reduce social isolation amongst the older women in Leeds and the surrounding area of the LGBT+ community. Our age range covers from 40 upwards.
SAGE is a Time-To-Shine funded project managed by MESMAC Leeds and AGE UK helping to support older adults in the LGBTQ+ community who are 50+ years old and living anywhere in Yorkshire, though the majority of members are from the Leeds area. Since its inception six years ago Sage has undertaken advocacy and networking on behalf of the older LGBTQ+ community, organised a variety of events to help combat loneliness and isolation for its members, provided opportunities to give back to the community through volunteering with SAGE and for personal growth through focussed training opportunities. While the Corona virus has affected the way they meet up they are pleased to confirm that, through the energy and commitment of the members and the Community Development Workers involved in SAGE they still meet on-line once a week on Tuesdays which is even more frequently than before the Corona virus affected us all!
During and following the lockdown LGBT Women’s Space and Sage have joined together to hold poetry evenings/events. These have been member led and have become an important part of their ‘toolkits for survival’, over recent difficult months. We would like to invite others to join us for an event to celebrate International Day of Disabled People.
Participants can choose to read their own poetry, to read poetry that inspires them or they find of relevance, to listen to others and contribute, to discuss the poems or simply just listen and enjoy.
