Event description

Description

“One of the most impressive musicians to emerge in Australia … with a dazzling technique dispensing hair-raising tempos… His writing displays a real depth of emotion …revelling in a zest for life and celebration." -The Australian Newspaper

DOORS: 19:30 PERFORMANCE: 20:00

Joseph Tawadros is a warmly engaging performer, presenting a thrilling mix of his own works that encompass world music, Middle Eastern music, jazz and classical elements.

Passionate, to contemplative, to transcendent - interspersed with rollicking up-tempo pieces – the emotional range of his repertoire leaves listeners exhilarated. Joseph performs with great technical skill: from super fast virtuoso work to poignant tender phrases. He draws deeply from the Arabic music he was immersed in from childhood, yet every piece he presents on stage is an original contemporary composition.

The music is enhanced with Joseph’s trademark storytelling and engaging with the audience. Catch him in this rare solo performance before he heads back to Australia for a National Tour.

“Never less than electrifying and always entertaining, given Joseph’s wild sense of humour and ability to laugh at many taboos, this was a sensational concert...” -Performing Arts Hub, August 2017

"From the first few notes of hearing Joseph Tawadros, one is astonished by his musical depth and stunning technique. This is a strong sensibility steeped in the history of his birth country and its musicians.” -Richard Tognetti, Australian Chamber Orchestra.

BACKGROUND

Joseph, 34, was born in Cairo, grew up in Sydney and lives in London. He performs all over the world, solo, or with his brother James, with his jazz quartet, with renowned jazz artists and often with orchestras, including BBC Symphony Orchestra, Morphing Chamber Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras.

He has released 14 albums of all original music and received 12 ARIA nominations and 4 ARIA Awards. He received the Order of Australia (AM) medal in 2016.

The 2018 internationally released film Ali’s Wedding soundtrack features Joseph’s oud throughout, so his distinctive sound is familiar to many beyond the concert audiences.

Joseph has been touring with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in mid 2018, and presented his own trio and solo concerts at the same time. He has performed to critical acclaim at the BBC Proms in London during July, as well as having a solo concert at Dubai Opera in September
