Event description

Description

Josquin Desprez was the greatest composer of the renaissance, whose stellar career took him from his origins in the Low Countries to the Choir of the Sistine Chapel in Rome and to the finest ducal and royal chapels in Europe. A byword for quality in his own lifetime, contemporary composers would often put Josquin's name at the top of their compositions rather than their own to ensure good sales. Over the last decades much musicological work has gone into determining which works by 'Josquin' are actually works by Josquin!

About the works in this programme there is no doubt: the men of De Profundis will be performing music that is very definitely by M. Desprez. The Missa Pange lingua, probably Josquin's last mass setting, is a sonorous masterpiece that has been described as 'a fantasy on a plainsong' and is based on the hymn for the Feast of Corpus Christi. The rest of the programme is made up of Josquin's greatest, most famous and most popular Marian motets, including Ave Maria...virgo serena and Salve regina and finishing with Benedicta es, his three-part, six voice explosion of sound in praise of the Virgin.

De Profundis performs renaissance polyphony with the original all-male scoring and at the intended low pitch. Their conductor on this occasion, David Skinner, is a renowned scholar and director. He was co-founder of The Cardinall's Musick in 1989, is director of Alamire, and was music consultant for David Starkey's television series Music and Monarchy which aired in 2013. David is Fellow, Praelector and Osborn Director of Music at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he teaches historical and practical topics from the medieval and renaissance periods. In 2015 he and Alamire won the Gramophone Early Music Award for their Obsidian release 'The Spy's Choirbook'.
