Event description

Description

“I was told to come alone. I was not to carry any identification, and would have to leave my cell phone, audio recorder, watch, and purse at my hotel...”

Souad Mekhennet launches her new book, 'I Was Told to Come Alone: My Journey Behind the Lines of Jihad'. In it, she recounts her journey as a reporter going behind the lines of jihad in Europe and the Middle East and North Africa. Beginning in the German neighbourhoods where the 9/11 plotters were radicalised and the Iraqi neighborhoods where Sunnis and Shias were turned against one another, Mekhennet interrogates the imaginary war between the West and Islam that has become a propaganda tool for both extremists and opportunist politicians alike and discusses some of the complex reasons behind the radicalisation of young Muslims.

Souad Mekhennet (@smekhennet) is a correspondent for The Washington Post’s national security desk, and she has reported on terrorism for The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, and NPR.
