Event description

Description

Sheffield’s Angelic Troublemakers and the ‘Demon Prince’s from Foren’...

A linear walk from west to east of the city centre, discussing Sheffield’s past actions on matters of race, class and protest. Mark will focus on the various anti-slavery societies of the 18th and 19th centuries, fugitive slaves, working-class solidarity and some of the cultural actions on race.

He’ll also talk about those who came to the city, such as the ‘coloured’ Victorian circus master, and visitors including Olaudah Equiano, Paul Robeson, Olive Morris and Malcolm X. What is the legacy of these people and their protests that might shine a light on how we now live together and engage in the world around us today?

Start: Premier Inn, Sheffield City Centre, Angel Street (between Snig Hill and Bank Street)
Finish: University of Sheffield, Student’s Union, S3 7RD

Terrain: City Streets

Led by: Mark Hutchinson from Journey to Justice (Sheffield)

Duration: 90 minutes

This walk is part of Sheffield Walking Festival and in partnership with Heritage Open Days
