" May 15th earlier this year was the 75th anniversary of the first flight of Whittle's W1 jet engine in the Gloster E28/39 aircraft at Cranwell, the RAF Training College in Lincolnshire. For Frank Whittle that first flight was the culmination of a long and arduous journey which had begun at the same place 13 years earlier. It was also the first of millions more flights which shrank the world and brought benefits to the whole of mankind.
The lecture will take you through the details of that incredible journey undertaken by one very determined and capable man against enormous odds to achieve his dream of aircraft flying at unheard of speeds and altitudes over long distances
