Join JRF for the third of three sessions exploring how we can collectively work towards imagining and building fairer futures in which we can all thrive.

The goal of these sessions is to hold space for those working within an emerging futures context, and explore the types of support people funded through the Emerging Futures Fund might need in addition to funding. Here is more information about the three sessions.

These three sessions are the first steps in growing a community of interest around JRF’s Emerging Futures work, bringing together people already embedded in transition work with others who are beginning to dip their toes in the water. They build on JRF’s Director of Emerging Futures’ initial briefing, and are positioned using data gathered via a survey that went out to people expressing an interest in joining in summer 2022.

We will build on the work of the first and second sessions (visualised summaries below), this time grappling with the presence and value of uncertainty (vs risk) in transition. We then shift to our final thematic lens. Here we explore the tension in the economic structures that both inhibit and facilitate our existence, looking towards new models of finance that could better support emerging futures work

The first half of the session is designed around exploring how to harness uncertainty to propel transformative change, asking the question:

How can we hold uncertainty and use it to help us emerge into a future in which we can all thrive?

Specifically, we will be exploring:

What is the difference between risk and uncertainty? Why is the distinction important?
How can uncertainty strengthen our transition work?

The second half of the session is designed around new economic thinking, asking the question:

How do we challenge the prevailing economic system to ensure emerging futures in which we can all thrive?

Specifically, we will be exploring:

Why is new economic thinking fundamental to transition and future-building?
What does a collective and equitable economy look like, and how do we start to construct it?

It is of the utmost importance for us to create an open environment to explore these themes and questions; we’d like the session to be really interactive so we can hear your views, and we can all begin (or continue) to build relations and connections within the workshop.
