Lincoln Cathedral Choir perform St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach in the Nave of Lincoln Cathedral on Saturday 1st April.
This masterpiece is the older of two surviving Passions by Bach. It was written during Bach’s first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed at St. Nicholas Church on Good Friday, 1724.
Compared with the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion has been described as more extravagant, with an expressive immediacy, at times raw and unbridled.
