JSFP Live: What Difference Will That Make with David Blowers
Overview
Welcome to JSFP Live, our new series of online conversations exploring articles published in the Journal of Solution Focused Practices.
In this first session we will be joined by David Blowers to discuss his paper 'What Difference Will That Make?’ – Contracting More Collaboratively in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. David is Clinical Lead/Senior Solution-Focused Therapist at Oxford Brookes University and a lecturer at Metanoia Institute. David will summarise his paper, followed by questions and discussion. The session is free to attend, thanks to JSFP's international sponsors.
Abstract
Solution-focused (SF) therapists often advise that if a client requests particular therapeutic processes then therapists should redirect the conversation towards outcomes. If the client hasn’t yet consented to SF therapeutic processes – or has requested different processes – then controlling the conversation in such a manner could be described as an act of dominance and could be counter-therapeutic. Alternatively, responding to the request would demonstrate respect. Research suggests involving clients in decisions about their therapy has clinical benefits.
The session will be hosted by Dr Mark McKergow, JSFP editor, and will be recorded for sharing on JSFP's new (yet to be created) Youtube channel.
Wednesday 19 November 2025, 5pm-6pm UK time (GMT). Register here to receive the call link.
Although David will be summarising his paper on the daym, it would be useful for participants to take a look at the article at https://journalsfp.org/article/142789-what-difference-will-that-make-contracting-more-collaboratively-in-solution-focused-brief-therapy.
This is the first in what we hope will turn into a series featuring JSFP authors and their work. Please get in touch with any questions and follow us here for notification of future events.
