About this Event

location

A big thank to our hosts, the Learning team at National Museum of Scotland!

Where to go: the Learning Centre at Level 4, Studio 2.

about

This session is for people committing to joining the learning cohort, including visiting exhibitions/attractions in your own time.

It is the first step in joining a new and vibrant learning cohort here at the Scottish Learning Group! Using Beverly Serrell's Judging Exhibitions: A Framework for Assessing Excellence, we find excellence in visitor attractions and exhibitions, discuss them as a cohort, and apply our learning to our own work.

Why? For the joy of learning and to inform our own practices, we focus on the positive, on excellence. It is not to produce a report for the exhibitors or something like that. The purpose of the Framework 'is to identify important characteristics...and to assess the degree to which those traits are present in a given exhibition in a way that encourages an increase in those characteristics in future exhibitions' (Serrell 2006: 17). The characteristics are:1. comfortable 2 engaging 3 reinforcing and 4 meaningful. Originally created for 'educational museum exhibitions', we are widening this out to include attractions, interpretation and learning more generally - anywhere free-choice learning takes place.

How?

1. this is the step we're taking at this event on the 29th: First meeting to learn the Framework: we'll take you through the theory, common vocabulary around criteria of experiences, the worksheets we use that guide us through the process, and how to assess an exhibition/attraction for how 1. comfortable 2 engaging 3 reinforcing and 4 meaningful the visitor-experience is.

after:

2. The Visit. This part is genius: WE are the visitors at our chosen exhibition/attraction! We take our worksheets to the chosen venue, experience it as visitor and find evidence of excellence

3. Second meeting: share, learn and engage with the cohort by sharing your personal reflections, all guided by the Framework

4. congratulations! You have completed a cycle and are now an 'Excellence Judge'!

5. we collectively choose an attraction/exhibition and begin again from step 2!

Prior to the event, we recommend:

At this event:

We'll send you your copy of the Framework worksheets. Make sure you have your worksheets to hand, as we'll be going through them while we explain the Framework process.

Please bring a packed lunch. It'll be casual, so just go ahead and eat as we have our training.

We provide this training as volunteers and it is free to attend. Thank you again for our hosts National Museum of Scotland for providing the venue!

See you there!
