Event description

Description

So your child wants to be a Junior Roller? Well bring them along to our Free Junior Roller Derby taster sessions and give it a go!

The first session is Sunday 22nd September and the second is Sunday 29th September, signing up will register you for both sessions.

Who can come along?

If your child is aged between 8 and 17 years and WE WANT THEM! We welcome all genders. No one is born playing roller derby, so everyone starts off as a beginner. We will teach you how to stop, turn around, skate backwards, fall safely, jump, and so much more!

What do you need?

Everyone attending a session will need to have all of the following:

  • Quad Skates

  • Knee pads

  • Elbow pads

  • Wrist guards

  • Helmet

We are able to lend out kit (supplies are limited as they are all donations, so please let us know what you need and we will check availability).

How does the session work?

The sessions will run from 10:15 - 11:15am at Skate Central.

The first session will be an introduction to what roller derby is. We will be off skates learning about the game and then having a chance to play sock derby which is the off skates version of the game, despite the name we recommend a pair of trainers for this! Our current junior skaters will be there to talk about their experiences and answer any questions.

The second session will be a chance to skate. We will start with an introduction to the safety equipment, a kit check, kit identification, putting on and taking off kit to ensure your child/ren know what the pieces of kit are called and how they should be worn. We will then do an off skates warm up, before putting on skates (which you are welcome to stay for, should you feel your child might benefit from some extra assistance). Your child will also learn some basic drills and be introduced to the core skills they will need to be safe during practice.

To ensure your child gets the most out of the session please ensure your child is in the sports hall, ready and dressed in appropriate clothing to take part in a physical activity for the session start time.

If your child likes the sessions and we feel happy they'll be safe, will invite you to sign up for our Junior Roller Derby Level 1 programme starting in October, where your child/ren will learn all the skills necessary to play roller derby and advance (when ready) to the next level in Junior Roller Derby .

What are the costs?

Your child's taster session is free. If they then want to join the new intake there is a 4 week taster block starting in October for £20 after which to become a full member it is £15 a month standing order with a discount for siblings. If your child receives free school meals we offer a reduced rate and extended kit hire.

Now all that's left is for you to complete the registration form to reserve your child place! And please feel free to join the Facebook event and start chatting to the other parents of skaters your child you'll be starting with.
