The Islay Book Festival is organising two walks to launch the the new volume of the Guide to the Geology of Islay, Jura and Colonsay. One of these is on Jura (26 june) and one on Islay (27 Jun). Both walks are featured in the new book.
A Guide to the Geology of Islay was first published in 2015 by Ringwood Publishing, with an updated edition printed in 2017. It has now been reissued and the third (2021) edition is now available. David Webster of Conisby is the lead author and during lockdown has been busy producing a Volume 2 of the book. Whereas the first book contained 12 excursions on Islay, the new book describes six excursions on Jura, three on Colonsay and four more on Islay.
The walks in the books vary from short easy strolls to more demanding hikes and can be used as walking guides as the geological descriptions are separated out from the walk directions. The geology is described at a level that is understandable by non-experts and geological backgrounds and glossaries of technical terms are included.
The books can be purchased now at the Celtic House bookshop in Bowmore, or on the day of the walk.
