Just Peace Movie Night: Dead Calm – Killing in the Med

Join us for a powerful evening organised by KUNO and The Hague Humanity Hub, part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series.

On 21 October, we screen the gripping documentary Dead Calm: Killing The Med, which exposes urgent questions about human rights at Europe’s borders, the role of EU and national coast guards, and the lived realities of those seeking safety. The film explores the June 2023 Pylos shipwreck, one of the deadliest maritime disasters in recent European history, in which more than 600 people drowned in front of a Greek coast guard vessel.

🎬 About the Film – Dead Calm: Killing in the Med
Hiding in the crystal-blue waters of the Aegean Sea lies a dark secret. Survivor testimonies and investigative accounts reveal masked men and coast guard boats rounding up people, forcing them onto flimsy dinghies, and abandoning them at sea. Many never return. This documentary raises stark questions of accountability, justice, and the human cost of border policies.

The movie screening will be followed by a dialogue in collaboration with KUNO, featuring the perspectives of journalists, humanitarian workers, and people with first-hand experience of migration. The discussion will explore the realities of migration, human rights at Europe’s borders, and the responsibilities of governments and citizens alike.

Sluit je aan voor een inspirerende avond georganiseerd door KUNO en Just Peace in The Hague Humanity Hub, als onderdeel van het Just Peace Month-programma.

Op 21 oktober vertonen we de indrukwekkende documentaire Dead Calm: Killing The Med, die dringende vragen oproept over mensenrechten aan de Europese grenzen, de rol van EU- en nationale kustwachten, en de dagelijkse realiteit van mensen die veiligheid zoeken. De film belicht de Pylos-ramp van juni 2023, een van de dodelijkste scheepsrampen in recente Europese geschiedenis, waarbij meer dan 600 mensen verdronken voor een Griekse kustwachtboot.

🎬 Over de film – Dead Calm: Killing in the Med
Verborgen in de kristalblauwe wateren van de Egeïsche Zee ligt een duister geheim. Overlevenden en onderzoeksverslagen onthullen hoe gemaskerde mannen en kustwachtboten mensen oppakken, hen op gammele rubberbootjes zetten en hen op zee achterlaten. Velen keren nooit terug. Deze documentaire stelt urgente vragen over verantwoordelijkheid, rechtvaardigheid en de menselijke kosten van grensbeleid.

Na de filmvertoning volgt een dialoog in samenwerking met KUNO, met de perspectieven van journalisten, humanitaire hulpverleners en mensen die migratie uit de eerste hand ervaren. De discussie zal de realiteit van migratie, mensenrechten aan de grenzen van Europa en de verantwoordelijkheden van zowel overheden als burgers onderzoeken.
