Kalan Gwav is the ancient festival marking the beginning of winter. In other Celtic corners it can be quite dark and sinister. Here in Cornwall the central theme from olden times has been... apples!
Join us to revive this age-old festival: make a loud noise at the Essa Wassail and learn about Early Bower - the apple variety that was developed here in Saltash; enter the scarecrow fancy dress competition or enter your home-made apple dishes in the Kalan Gwav Bake Off; munch on toffee apples and hot food prepared by Girl Guides and footballers; and finish off your evening watching the astounding firework display - set off by the same team that brought you fireworks on the Tamar Bridge.
A crew of volunteers is working hard to stage this Festival. Entry is free thanks to funding from Saltash Town Council, Saltash United Football Club, FEAST and Lloyds. But please give a donation - it means the firework display will be even more spectacular! And any surplus money will either be ploughed in to staging the Festival next year or donated to local charities.
