Event description

Description

Japanese katazome (or stencil dyeing) is a centuries-old method of printing on cloth using paper stencils and a rice paste resist in combination with indigo. In this one-day workshop we’ll look briefly at the history of this art, before using traditional Japanese stencil paper to hand cut stencils. We’ll then use them to print a repeat pattern onto silk or cotton using a traditional rice paste resist. When the resist is dry, we’ll use indigo to dye the fabric, and then wash out the paste to reveal a white pattern on an indigo ground. Participants will take home their stencils, fabric samples and a comprehensive resource list that will enable them to explore this beautiful textile print medium independently. A light lunch is provided.
