Event description

Description

What can literature tell us about the nature of knowledge, reality and existence? In this series of events, organised by the 'Knowledge Beyond Natural Science' project, we will look at the philosophy to be discovered within classic and contemporary works of fiction.

For our second Café, we have chosen Glasshouse by Charles Stross. Glasshouse presents us with a world where humanity is now post-human, in which memory is optional, death is not final and bodies are interchangeable. The world depicted in Glasshouse invites us to consider a range of questions about our knowledge of the world and of ourselves. What does it mean to have self-knowledge when one can change body at will? If we can’t trust our memories, can we trust what we (seem to) know? If I don’t know I did something, can I be held responsible for it? Come along to join in the conversation!

This event will be presented by Paul Conlan (St Andrews - Stirling Programme).
