Event description

Description

An Evening celebrating the life and work of Peter De Rome, also known as the Grandfather of Gay Porn. Featuring both a screening of the documentary, The Grandfather of Gay Porn and De Rome’s short film Encounter, this evening promises to be an insightful retrospective of a little known, influential filmmaker. De Rome’s trajectory from illegal auteur to being honoured by the BFI is wittily documented with moments of erotic spectacle and insightful interviews looking into eight decades of the gay experience both in the UK and USA.

Encounter (1971) Dir. Peter de Rome. 13 min.

A group of men are drawn through the New York streets until they converge in a kind of erotic ritual. This film was recently re-scored by musician Stephen Thrower.

Peter de Rome: The Grandfather of Gay Porn (2014) Dir. Ethan Reid. 97 min.

A humous and intimate portrait of legendary director Peter de Rome. Juxtaposing both his quiet retirement in Sandwich with his underground porn-making of the 60s and 70s, this film gives an artful insight into a filmmaker, the gay experience, and de Rome's continued influence.

Live Panel Discussion

The screenings will be followed by a discussion between the documentary's producer, David McGillivray and KCL teaching fellow, Victoria Carroll.

We hope you will be able to join us for this very special evening!
