About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours
  • ALL AGES

Support for Windows 10 expires on October 14, 2025. If you’re a Windows 10 user, it will be unsafe to keep using your computer and you may be forced to buy a new one.

Good news - if you bought your machine after 2010, then chances are we can help you keep using it for many years to come by installing Linux Mint. This is free software that safely runs your computer instead of Windows, and it is very easy for existing Windows users to use.

Edinburgh Linux Café is a group of IT professionals that want to help people save money - and reduce electronic waste along the way.

We can help you:

  • Try out Linux Mint for the first time without installing anything on your computer
  • Install Linux Mint if you decide you want it (You can keep Windows too and then choose which one to start when you turn on the computer)
  • Transfer your files
  • Install your favourite software and show you how to keep it updated

This is a drop-in event. Come along at any time from 10am to 12:30pm with your laptop and any chargers that it needs to operate.

Please book a ticket so we know how many people to expect.

Frequently asked questions

Is Linux Mint easy to use?

It looks very similar to Windows and works much the same way, so if you are used to Windows you will feel right at home. You can try out Mint without installing anything, so if it doesn't work for you, you can stop at any time.

Can I use Microsoft Word?

Yes. Linux Mint comes with a free version ready to go which can open and save Word files. (No more subscriptions!) If you prefer to keep using Microsoft Word specifically, we can show you how to open it in a browser.

Is Linux Mint compatible with my existing webcam, mouse, keyboard, home printer and other devices?

Yes, most devices are supported and can be connected using the way you already connect them.

My computer is a desktop or too heavy to bring to the event. Can I still take part?

Yes. You can have a go using one of our computers. If you bring a USB stick with you, we can put Linux Mint on it for you and show you how to install it at home.
